Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB External HD

The growing demand for additional storage on home computers and portable devices has jumped enormously within 15 years. The days where 10GB of hard-drive space was considered alot is nothing more than a joke in todays standards. Your very own mobile phone holds that much. Because of the boom of the internet around the time AOL was the major player in the dial-up market which eventually led to the transition to broadband, the internet and its accessibility to content  has skyrocketed. We are a society amassed around the idea of we have to watch and experience everything so when the idea  arrived that we can simply download music, movies and software for free from websites and store mass collections of photos we have taken from our daily lives, the demand for more space was inevitable. Soon by default, every computer in stores will have a hard-drive size of 1TB minimum and probably within the next 5-10 years as broadband speeds increases and internet lock down doesn’t take place we can eventually see hard-drives boom to 5TB’s. You can look now and say 5TB isn’t needed, but lets look back in 1995, when 2GB hard-drives was the norm… need I say more?

MacBook Pro Core i7 – At Blazin Speeds

By Jason Chen | Source

MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i7 Benchmarked: It's So Fast
The new 17 and 15-inch MacBook Pros with Core i5/i7 processors are fast. Fast. Overall I’d say they’re about 50% faster than the last gen Core 2 Duos, which is about the same bump the iMacs got with Core i7.

Here are benchmarks to show exactly how much faster.

MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i7 Benchmarked: It's So Fast
About 50% faster in the Geekbench tests.

MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i7 Benchmarked: It's So Fast
The Xbench tests are a bit more all-over-the-place, but that’s more because Xbench hasn’t been updated in a while. Still, faster.

MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i7 Benchmarked: It's So Fast
Re-encoding a file with Handbrake 64-bit shows pretty well the race between CPUs. At 19:54 vs. 32:19, the Core i7 MacBook pro—even though it’s 2.66GHz vs. 2.8GHz—is just about 50% faster.

MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i7 Benchmarked: It's So Fast
So there ya go, the Core i7 CPUs make a pretty damn big difference in performance. We’ll be testing the Nvidia Geforce 330M discrete graphics in another post to see how much that has improved over the 9600M.

HP Promises Everything the iPad Isn’t with Slate

By Tony Bradley | Source

HP released a new video showing off its upcoming “iPad killer”–the Slate tablet PC. The video is reminiscent of Verizon’s “Droid Does” campaign highlighting all of the capabilities of the Android-based Droid that the Apple iPhone can’t deliver. In a mere 30 seconds HP manages to demonstrate that its tablet is–in a nutshell–everything Apple’s iPad isn’t.

The Apple iPad launched this past Saturday and has been a tremendous success. Even those who aren’t captivated by the iPad have been forced to admit a healthy respect for what its capable of. For all the iPad does well, though, it can’t seem to escape the fact that it won’t completely replace your desktop or notebook PC.

The HP Slate, on the other hand, may be another story. All of the features and functions lacking in the Apple iPad as a business tool or notebook replacement, exist on the HP Slate. Apple has succeeded in bringing the tablet PC concept to the mainstream consciousness, but HP has the benefit of riding the tablet wave, while also learning from Apple’s mistakes and introducing a tablet that fills the perceived holes in the iPad.

Camera / video. The camera, and the ability to record video may be more consumer gadget than business tool, but video conferencing is becoming mainstream and mobile business professionals rely on it. The HP Slate video demonstrates a two-way video call using Skype–indicating that the Slate will have both front and rear-facing cameras.

USB ports. Apple is known for creating exemplary user experiences, but those user experiences come with locked-down, proprietary hardware. The HP Slate has USB ports–enabling attachment of external storage, and other USB-enabled devices just like on a standard desktop or notebook PC.

SD memory expansion. USB devices can be used to expand storage capacity on the tablet, but SD memory cards are a much less obtrusive way to do so. With the Apple iPad, whatever storage capacity you purchase is the storage capacity you are stuck with–there is no option to expand it if necessary. The Slate has an SD memory card slot.

Software. The HP Slate is a Windows 7-based device. You can install the software you are used to rather than just the apps approved by Apple. Granted, there are 150,000 apps in the Apple App Store, and already thousands of iPad-specific apps, but there will inevitably be software you use on a daily basis that just won’t work on an iPad. The video shows the HP Slate with iTunes, Skype, and the Mozilla Firefox Web browser installed.

Adobe Flash. Arguably one of the most-discussed gaps in iPad functionality is the lack of support for Adobe Flash. I am of the opinion that the Web should be standards-based and not rely on a proprietary technology like Flash, but its hard to argue with the fact that Flash is fairly ubiquitous on the Web today.

As much as the community at large has debated the value of the iPad as a business tool–Apple failed to hold up its end. Apple was so focused on building a consumer gadget that it left off critical elements that could have let the iPad not just be used as a business tool–but dominate as a business tool.

The iPad is a success, and it has significantly more business functionality than iPad naysayers would have you believe, but Apple left the door open for HP and others to ride on iPad’s coattails and deliver a true business-capable tablet device. Apple will end up either accepting its role as a niche consumer gadget–a role it is familiar and comfortable with–or be forced to play catch up with devices like the Slate as it develops the iPad 2.0.

The bottom line is that the HP Slate is a significant device. It may not “beat” the iPad in total sales, and it may not cause the sort of hyperbole and excitement that Apple brought with the iPad, but even if it ends up as only the second-best tablet on the market, it will be a win for HP and a significant step for Windows 7-based tablets.

New York Times prominent among media iPad apps

by Lance Whitney | Source: CNET

As their print editions lose readers and business, many newspaper and magazine publishers are hoping the iPad will prove fertile ground for new customers.

iPad owners who need their daily New York Times fix can grab it courtesy of the paper’s new iPad app or even just the site itself, which made Apple’s list of iPad-ready sites that have been optimized for compatibility with the iPad’s features. The Times’ iPad features got a prominent preview during Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ unveiling of the tablet device in January.

The free New York Times Editor Choice app will download to the iPad a daily selection of the newspaper’s top business and technology stories, opinions, and features picked by Times editors. Readers will find 8 to 10 articles all captured from the paper’s regular news pages and columns.

Using the tablet’s touch screen, iPad owners can tap to view the videos and slideshows that will join many of the Times stories. Articles and images can also be downloaded and synced to the iPad, so readers can view them without a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. The new app is free and supported by advertisers, but the Times said it’s planning a paid app that would offer more content.

The Times is joined by a growing list of other publishers eager to tap into the new iPad market.

USA Today is launching its own iPad app Saturday with a hook to lure in readers. The app will be free until July 4 and then available through a fee-based subscription. In addition to providing the latest news stories, the USA Today app will offer photos and graphics to take advantage of the iPad’s high-resolution screen.

The Wall Street Journal is unveiling a free iPad app on Saturday with selected news stories, videos, and slideshows for non-subscribers, but a richer array of content for people willing to pay $3.99 a week to subscribe. Current subscribers of the Journal’s print edition can get full access free for a limited time.

Magazine publishers are also hopping onto the iPad with new apps on Saturday. Popular Science is launching a $4.99 app, GQ will hit the tablet with its own $2.99 app, and National Geographic will debut its $4.99 Beautiful Planet HD app, featuring photos from around the world.

Though newspapers and magazines are offering full content for free, most are adopting a strategy similar to that of the Times and the Journal–dangle a limited number of stories for free, but then charge for a fuller plate of content. iPad users, for example, will be able to download for free 12 pages of content from the April issue of Men’s Health magazine as a preview.

The full April issue will then be available for download in the iTunes store for $4.99 and will be followed by the May issue, available by April 20. The Men’s Health iPad app will also offer interactive features including real-time polls and increased social-networking capabilities with Twitter and Facebook, and will incorporate full-screen, high-definition video footage from behind the scenes of Men’s Health cover shoots.

However, the strategy of offering a bit of content for free before charging for it may not do much to stem the tide of shrinking sales. Surveys, such as a recent Harris poll, found a significant number of people unwilling to pay for content online.
